Check Your Heart: Are We Living in Babylon?

Week Theme: The Collapse of Comfort — Why America Mirrors Babylon and Rome
Anchor Text: Revelation 18:11–14
Heart Issue: False Security in Economic Strength and National Identity

📖 “The fruit for which your soul longed has gone from you…” — Revelation 18:14

The question isn’t if Babylon will fall. It’s when — and whether your heart will fall with it.

In Revelation 18:11–14, Babylon's fall is marked not just by spiritual rebellion, but by economic catastrophe and a people in denial about their dependence on stuff. This week, we’re checking our hearts on a national and personal level. Because Babylon isn’t just a place — it’s a posture.

🧠 Babylon, Rome… and America: 3 Empires. One Pattern.

❌ 1. They believed their economy was untouchable.

“The merchants of the earth weep and mourn… no one buys their cargo anymore.”Revelation 18:11

Ancient Rome printed excess currency (debased the silver denarius), leading to hyperinflation.
Babylon was the financial hub of the ancient world, with trade routes stretching across continents — until it was invaded in one night (Daniel 5).
Modern America is drowning in over $35 trillion in national debt, de-dollarization is gaining momentum globally, and in 2023-2024 we saw:

  • The collapse of Silicon Valley Bank and First Republic — major institutions once thought too solid to fail

  • Record inflation peaking at levels not seen in 40 years

  • Global nations beginning to trade oil in yuan, bypassing the U.S. dollar

  • Rising credit card debt: over $1.3 trillion as of 2024

  • Fed interest rate hikes pinching homebuyers and renters alike

📍 Check Your Heart:
Are you resting your future on an economy that Scripture warns is fading?
Do your financial decisions reflect a trust in eternal provision or earthly systems?

🎭 2. They were addicted to luxury, comfort, and pleasure.

“Cargo of gold, silver… fine linen, purple cloth… all your delicacies and your splendors are lost to you.”Revelation 18:12–14

Rome turned to bread and circuses — distracting the population with games, gladiators, and government handouts while the empire decayed.
Babylon flaunted opulence, excess, and indulgence (Isaiah 47:8–10).
America:

  • In 2024, Americans spent over $143 billion on cosmetics, plastic surgery, and luxury goods, while giving to churches and charities dropped

  • Netflix, TikTok, and sports franchises have become modern coliseums — where we pacify purpose with pleasure

  • Sexual immorality is not just accepted but celebrated and monetized (OnlyFans revenue surpassed $5 billion in 2023)

📍 Check Your Heart:
What are the “delicacies” of your soul?
Are we grieving the loss of luxury more than the absence of righteousness?

🏛️ 3. They turned power and politics into gods.

“She glorified herself and lived in luxury… saying, ‘I sit as queen, I am no widow, and mourning I shall never see.’”Revelation 18:7

Babylon and Rome both fell with military dominance intact — their collapse began morally and spiritually first.
Modern America:

  • Over $800 billion spent annually on military, yet:

    • Rising veteran suicide and PTSD go under-addressed

  • Our national identity has become a political one — blue vs. red — more than a moral or spiritual one

  • American pride says: “We’ll never fall.” But in 2024:

    • Trust in government and media is at historic lows (Pew Research)

    • Political violence and extremism are rising across both parties

    • Moral lines are blurred — from abortion to AI ethics to child exploitation laws

📍 Check Your Heart:
Is your faith shaped more by a political platform or by the gospel?
Do you believe America’s power protects you more than God’s promises?

😤 4. They normalized pride and rejected repentance.

Babylon: “You felt secure in your wickedness… Your wisdom and your knowledge led you astray.”Isaiah 47:10
Rome: Crucified truth to preserve pride.
America:

  • Personal branding, influencer culture, and manifestation spirituality promote a gospel of you are god

  • Churches increasingly avoid speaking on sin out of fear of losing donations, followers, or cultural relevance

  • Repentance is seen as weakness — not freedom

📍 Check Your Heart:
Do you still feel conviction, or are you numb to compromise?
Is repentance your rhythm — or your last resort?

💡 5. They built towers instead of altars.

“Her sins are heaped high as heaven, and God has remembered her iniquities.”Revelation 18:5

We’ve rebuilt Babel.
We’ve mastered innovation, tech, finance, AI — but lost intimacy with the God who breathes life.

In 2024:

  • The U.S. led global AI development, but mental health disorders and loneliness hit all-time highs

  • Suicide became the second leading cause of death among those 10–24

  • We have apps for everything but answers for nothing

📍 Check Your Heart:
Is your life built on the rock of Jesus or the tower of your own effort?
What altar have you sacrificed your time, attention, and resources on?

🧎‍♂️ Final Call: Come Out of Her, My People

“Come out of her, my people, lest you take part in her sins, lest you share in her plagues.”Revelation 18:4

This isn’t about leaving a zip code.
It’s about leaving a mindset.

Jesus is not building Babylon 2.0. He’s calling us to something better.
Babylon is built for business, pride, and profit.
The Kingdom is built for love, justice, and truth.

🛑 Weekly Checklist: Check Your Babylon

✅ Where am I placing more hope in the economy than in God’s provision?
✅ Have I begun to idolize comfort or luxury?
✅ Is my identity rooted in politics, power, or personal pride?
✅ Do I regularly confess sin and repent — or justify and explain it away?
✅ Am I preparing for the Kingdom, or trying to preserve Babylon?

Prayer

Father, remind me that this world is not my home. Expose every piece of Babylon in my heart — every trust in riches, pride in power, or compromise for comfort. Teach me to long for the fruit that remains, not the delicacies that fade. Help me come out of her before she collapses. Amen.
